The comments section below ended up being a rather nice illustration of precisely the thing I'm warning about with taking propaganda at face value.
DJ is making claims below about finding "50+ files" that are "incorrect and changed", "key features left out", "warped", etc. He uses this as proof of someone intentionally going in and messing with files. When asked to provide proof he clams up a bit and only wants to talk over "secure channels".
The key points to this narrative are:
1. A massive number of files are messed up
2. This includes even popular files by established devs, like the Not-A-Glock
3. This "file poisoning" is being done intentionally by nefarious forces
As with a lot of the claims I discuss in my original post, this narrative is neither technologically or sociologically plausible.
1. It's not technically plausible because there is no known method for a nefarious actor to "poison" somebody else's Odysee release, e.g. the Not-A-Glock. To be clear, this would mean hacking Odysee and modifying someone's claim. Everything about Odysee's blockchain architecture is meant to forestall this sort of thing.
2. It's not sociologically plausible because, if this poisoning was happening at this scale, it would be detected and broadly discussed on the many established 3D2A platforms (/r/3D2A, Guncad Index forums, Rocketchat, etc.) - not in the comments section of a random Substack post.
Shittinator has suggested that DJ is intentionally spreading misinformation (https://x.com/theshittinator/status/1990529154304156005). Maybe - but I prefer to first think that DJ is someone who, like lots of people, isn't super technically knowledgeable, and is partial to scary-sounding narratives.
It's easy to imagine DJ opening up a few files and seeing details / qualities that look wrong to him, or printing a file and finding that his print is out of spec. He's also heard about some nefarious group putting out bad files. It's fun and interesting to jump to the conclusion that his bad print is due to an intentionally poisoned file, and that this must be happening at a grand scale.
Of course, in the absence of further evidence, I find it much more likely that his printer is just not tuned well (should have got a Bambu :)
People like to draft and share conspiracies. It's fun. But it's a problem when, in an article that tries to help new gun printers feel comfortable printing a file safely and privately, the first thing they see in the comments section is an unproven conspiracy. DJ may or may not be intentionally spreading FUD, but even if it's not intentional, *the effect is still the same.*
This is the danger of accepting psyops at face value. The purpose of the Dagoma "file poisoning" project was almost certainly not to actually put bad files out there, *but to get people to forever worry about bad files.*
The result is that, when someone like DJ's prints don't work, their reaction is not to learn more and become better printers / gun builders, but to chalk it up to a conspiracy. And why bother growing and improving if the feds are just going to fuck you over regardless?
As a community we must learn to be realistic about our vulnerabilities and attack surfaces. We must learn when vigilance is appropriate, and when it mutates into paranoia. And we must stop spreading fear and doubt that scares new people off.
Help new people recognize the legitimate hazards and risks of gun printing, certainly - but never let this mutate into unfounded fearmongering.
You are correct about what thing. I am not in tune with much of the boards, chat groups whatever but their was no intention of spreading bad info. I was simply stating what I had found. Wasn't just me either, have friends that have come across the same and wasn't because I have a bad printer. Corrupt or incomplete files are out there. Plenty.. Where they come from is not my concern or my job. Again, I was just stating what I found and sent you the file. Many more but limited what I can send via email size wise and honestly nothing i can do about it anyway. Their are no psy-ops or anything. My first and only comment ever left and only becasuse your 3d2a newsletter showed up in my inbox. Just your wild smeer campaign conclusions that you arrived by. If i had ill intentions I wouldnt have posted or made you aware. Guess help or a different perspective isn't appreciated these days. Could be a big contributor but im not. Now you know why.
Being the creator of the Not-a-Glock. I have seen the damaging files.. they dont do it by hacking the origanl.. they start by claming to be the creator.. u can find multipal odysee accounts claming to be me. And they modyfy files and poast them.. i had multipal people in a help group with these files causing major issues.. OOB
Their are already many 3d2a files I've found recently on guncad that already have been manipulated. Not sure if it the company you speak of, the feds, or just some a**hole doing it. I've found at least 50+ files that look normal, until you really look at the fine details. Little things like Dimensions being offset, dimensions being incorrect and changed, certain key features modified or left out, or "warped" in a way that your printer cannot print. Embedded in the files and only once you print you find out. Though their are many you see once you slice the file and preview it. Your left wondering "what the f*ck**. The other day about 20 files I went though were all warped. Missing parts and pieces. Even ones such as the popular Not a glock. Most of the new files for that are not correct snd have been modified. I found out the hard way. Had to go back to original file release and use those. So my point is someone is already spreading these files and editing them in order to discredit and shoot down the 3d2A community. Little do they realize the majority of us are goof hardworking people that are passionate about technology and pushing those limits. Its the 1% that have ill intentions and they will regardless of our community and what files are on the internet. They will always find a way if they have ethat mindset, sadly. Just sharing things I've noticed in the past year in this ever developing community. God bless 3d2A and our freedoms.
I hope it's rather rare because what this person says is regular for him. I am passionate about the wrong continent but the full DIY files are really exceptional when you know a minimum of using your head and your ten fingers. I hope when taking the maximum precautions exit the internet as much as possible and vnp to download we are not contaminated
Thank you because yes I find it rather suspicious especially since you put so much good will that I take my hat off to you you all have my respect despite the fact that you put me a little aside at the beginning out of distrust because I am on the wrong side of the Atlantic. But on the one hand it motivated me even more and I take pleasure now to search create test and start collecting
This is a bit late, but still wanted to add for emphasis: Print & Go just looks like a vaporware slicer. Was willing to test it out to see if there was anything there, but after a few minutes on their website I wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole. Their firmware claim was also laughable. Regardless, great write up as usual. Thank you and keep them coming!

Not familiar with matrix or element(previous comment) Send me an email and I can send you video.
My email is public - customersupport@3dprintfreedom.com. Please email me anything you like there.

Could you link me to some examples of this? I'll check out the NAG, what are some others?
I can but would prefer to do something like that through different channels where I can provide some info, pics and most importantly isn't public.
Of course man. I'm on Element as Alyosha3DPFreedom

Until OP substantiates their claims, assume they're a bad actor. This is FUD until proof is provided.

Hi, I'm the Shittinator, I run the GunCAD Index.
There are some links to some socials in the footer of the Index. DM me on either platform with some evidence, if you don't mind.
In process. Can I send to you via your site directly?
Negative. Do Matrix if you're worried about something -- their E2EE is serviceable.
