The DIY smokeless powder piece is particularly intriguing, as nitroglycerine produced from this method would perhaps be far more useful for manufacturing DIY dynamite than smokeless powder. For the possibilities that entails I leave it to the reader's imagination.

In any cases, I would start with only nitrocellulose first (single base powder), even for short barrels. More than enough to begin with. The double base powder is not mandatory to survive, in case you need powder THAT much.

There was quite an interesting video put out by the YT channel Everything Black Powder where it was demonstrated how black powder will work in many modern firearms and is capable of cycling actions in a 1911 and an AR-15. Not ideal, and extremely filthy, but demonstrated that the belief that running out of modern smokeless will make firearms chambered for it useless is erroneous.

I love that channel, the guy is great. I also watched Kentucky Ballistics testing BP in modern weapons, It works few rounds but then you need to disassemble and to clean a lot. Better than nothing.

Regarding the tutorial on smokeless powder, few details are missing, even though I salute the effort form the author : powder stabilisants and powder shape (extrusion). The shape of the grains matters in the pressure pike.

And for the people reading this, I think playing with nitroglycerine is not worth it. Nitrocellulose is almost alright in comparison.

Most people are unaware that many cartridges in use today were originally black powder cartridges, or based upon black powder cartridges. Black powder is relatively simple to make provided one is not an idiot, as Anything Black Powder has demonstrated.

I personally wouldn't dabble with smokeless manufacturing and nitroglycerine is unbelievably dangerous stuff. I think Nobel's brother died in an accident from testing it. That being said, I do think it is important that those who do know what they are doing find a way to make this process less dangerous, better understood, and achievable for an underground manufacturing/partisan workshop-type effort as the ability to synthesize it would allow dynamite to be manufactured which would be critical for any real resistance against tyranny.

Precursor chemicals for modern explosives are tightly controlled, and the Iraqis were able to manage their IED and EFP manufacture and campaign via melting down explosives from hidden stockpiles of artillery shells which is an option that is simply unavailable in western countries.

These skills combined with drones are proven to be deadly already so yeah, a good knowledge to have just in case. We need to read chemistry more I guess.

I hope one day we will find a way to make the safest smokeless powder. Or the safest process possible. In the meantime, BP is good, gold powder and crimson powder too.
